We quickly got back into the swing of things after a week off for Easter. Spring is a time when we start to see lots of bugs and animals come out again so we have been talking a lot about that. We have been watching our 5 live caterpillars eating and growing. In one week they have more than doubled in size! We are keeping an observation chart in the hallway outside of our classroom if you want to watch their growth. The caterpillars we made are also hanging on our hall wall. We’ve been singing songs to help us learn about the butterfly’s cycle. Our favorite song though is a silly one about Herman the caterpillar:
Sitting on the fence post, chewing up my bubblegum, playing with my yo yo, along comes Herman the Caterpillar. And he was this big. (Move hands apart about 1 foot.) And I said, “Herman, what’s the matter?” and he said, “I ate a car!”
Sitting on the fence post, chewing up my bubblegum, playing with my yoyo, along comes Herman the Caterpillar. And he was this big. (Move hands a little farther apart.) And I said, “Herman, what’s the matter?” and he said, “I ate a truck!”
We continue to sing as he grows bigger by eating a bus and then a train.
Finally we sing: Sitting on the fence post, chewing up my bubblegum, playing with my yo yo, along comes Herman the Caterpillar. And he was this big. (Use 2 fingers to show about 1″.) And I said, “Herman, what’s the matter?” and he said, “I burped!”
The children burst out into laughter at the end of every verse! I promise though our other songs are a little more realistic.
The children have begun to make a number book. They illustrated the number “1″ with one red fingerprint that has turned into a red lady bug. We also made a ladybug for our May calendars. Their attendance cards were shaped like the number one and they put one bear in the number one jar.
Our Bible story was about a man who could not walk but was healed by the power of Jesus. He was so happy that “he went walking and leaping and praising God.” We thanked God for our hands and feet and for some of the things God made them to do. Hands can wave, pet, clap, play, pray… Feet can karate kick, walk, run, hop, tap… Read the prayer wall for what your child thanked God for. God gave the crippled man new life when he healed his legs just like he gives new life to the caterpillar when he transforms it into a butterfly. He also wants to give us new life when we allow Him to take charge of our lives.
In Celebration we played In and Out the Window. The children stood in a circle and held hands. We lifted them up to open our windows. Two children at a time turned into butterflies and flew in and out the windows as we sang:
Fly in and out the window. Fly in and out the window. Fly in and out the window. Our little butterflies.
We continue with the amazing story of Easter. I have one dozen Easter eggs with little trinkets inside that help tell the Easter story. The children are getting very good at recalling the items and details of the story. I hope they are sharing it with you too.
Our classroom and hallway are full of the children’s beautiful art work. Step inside the classroom when you drop off or pick up to see their work on our bulletin boards and windows. They can probably show you where theirs is located.
Sue Brese, our traditional worship leader, beautifully led us in chapel this week by reading and letting us experience Psalm 150. It says, “Praise the Lord! Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in His mighty heavens! Praise Him for His mighty deeds; praise Him according to His excellent greatness! Praise Him with trumpet sound; praise Him with lute and harp! Praise Him with tambourine and dance; praise Him with strings and pipe! Praise Him with sounding cymbals; praise Him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
She explained each description of God and showed us each instrument that the Bible mentions. Our favorite part was when we got to use an instrument and shout “praise the Lord” louder than the sound of the instrument. We felt God’s presence as we praised the Lord together in His sanctuary.
Monday’s class made their “New Life” chick and Tuesday’s class listened to a dental hygienist teach us about tooth care and made very large toothbrushes.
We finished the week by making an Easter basket. The children decorated paper Easter eggs and glued them onto a paper Easter basket along with some Easter grass.
On Monday and Tuesday we had a relay race in Celebration (gym). Each child was given a beanbag and lined up in one of two lines. The first child in each line ran to the other end of the gym, dropped their beanbag into a bucket and ran back before the next child ran. After everyone had released their beanbags we repeated the exercise, except this time they had to run, retrieve their beanbag and return. It was fun to hear the kids cheering for each other as they ran.
Thursday’s class was fortunate to get outside in the beautiful sunshine for a little while. We forgot to check on the mommy mourning dove to see if her eggs have hatched yet.
We look forward to our classroom Easter party this Tuesday and Wednesday. Our school will be closed for Easter break so we will have no classes Thursday April 9 – Thursday, April 16. Classes will resume Monday and Tuesday, April 20 and 21.
Christ has risen! He has risen indeed!
