Harvest Day Songs

Thought you might enjoy the words to the Harvest Day Songs that we sang:

Five Little blackbirds sitting in a tree, teasing Mr. Scarecrow, “You can’t scare me. You can’t scare me.” Along came Mr. Scarecrow as quiet as can be. BOO! Four little blackbirds sitting on a tree….3…2…1… No more blackbirds sitting in the tree.

Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Pick the corn and pick the beans. Pick squash and pick the greens. It is harvest time you see. Come and thank our God with me. Invite your family out to play. We will have a happy day.

Tune: I’m a Little Teapot

I’m a little pumpkin orange and round. Here is my stem and here is the ground. When I get all cut up don’t you shout. Just open me up and scoop me out.

Five Little Pumpkins Sitting on a Gate

Words are on the craft sent home Monday and Tuesday.

My God is so Big so strong and so mighty there’s nothing my God can not do. 2xs The sunshine is His, the moonbeams are His, the stars are His handiwork too. My God is so big, so strong and so mighty there’s nothing my God can not do for.

Happy Singing!

Harvest Day Party!

A great Harvest Day Party! Thanks to all who came and listened to our singing and brought in items for our party. We had a great turn out.  I know that some even took some time off of work to be here. We are grateful. We ate and ate and ate some more. I bet many of the kids weren’t too hungry for lunch. I was so proud of our singers! I never know how they are going to react to so many people watching them. What a blessing Mary, Theresa, Colleen and Julie were to us. They prepared and served the snacks and cleaned up. It wouldn’t have gone as smoothly without them. A big thank you to you all.

After you all left we carved our pumpkin into a jack o lantern while our mom helpers prepared the snack. I put a candle in our jack o lantern, turned out the lights and lit it, explaining to the children that just as the jack o lantern shines his light, God wants us to shine the light of Jesus. We talked about some ways to shine Jesus light in our life by obeying our parents, being kind, and telling others how much Jesus loves them. On Wednesday we sang “This Little Gospel Light of Mine” but didn’t have time on Thursday. Here are the words if you would like to sing it at home:

1) This little Gospel light of mine, I’m going to let it shine. (3xs) Let it shine, all the time, let it shine.

2) Don’t you dare to poof it out, I’m going to let it shine. (3xs) Let it shine, all the time, let it shine.

3) Hide it under a bushel. NO! I’m going to let it shine. (3xs)…

4) All around the neighborhood, I’m going to let it shine. (3xs)…

Since our free play was cut short because of our performance we let the children play while some enjoyed creating orange and black collages. After our delicious snack we headed for Celebration (the gym). With all the excitement and treats we had we needed to run off some energy.

We finished the day with a story called, A Bumpy Little Pumpkin. I have to admit that as much as we enjoyed the day I’m glad we don’t have a party day everyday. We were all pretty tired by the end!

Have fun trick or treating. I hope you can wear the “Glow in God’s Love” glow necklace to help keep you safe and share God’s love on Halloween night.

Enjoy the photos Mrs. Coons took. Click on the one photo and once you get to my web album click slide show.

Harvest Party

Looking forward to our Harvest Day Party tomorrow and Thursday. I hope you can all stay for 20 – 30 minutes after morning drop off. Once everyone has arrived we will line the children up to sing a few songs. Cameras are welcome. We’ve moved a few toy shelves to open the room up a little bit so you have a better view of the singers. A few chairs are also set up for some to sit so there will be more visibility for parents in the back.

Now, if we can just get the children to sing! :-) I have been known to sing a solo at these parties!

Next week starts purple week!

Orange Week

It’s fun walking in the hall to the gym and having staff members comment about the color of the week just by looking at the kids. Thanks for dressing them up. I have seen some creative ways to add the color if you don’t have clothes that match. Some have worn hair ribbons, a piece of yarn around their wrist, socks, or a jacket to match the color. One little girl has new finger nail polish on each week to match the color. This week she wears orange and black on her nails. How fun! Can you think of any other ideas!

Snack has been exciting too! This week we have eaten orange crackers, black raisins and orange juice. By the way, thanks for all the healthy snacks. We have been gobbling them up.

We’re practicing our songs that we will be singing for you at the Harvest Day party. Hope you can come. Arrival is normal time but you can stay and play for a few minutes. Once everyone has arrived we will gather everyone up to sing you a few songs. Hopefully I won’t be singing a solo. :-) We will be finished by 9:20.

In Bible we learned that God gives us helpers to take care of us, protect us and provide for us, just like He gave Moses helpers when he was a baby in harms way. Some of our helpers are our parents, teachers, fire fighters, police officers, and farmers.

We finished blue week with Madame Blueberry from Veggie Tales. If you’re not familiar with Veggie Tales I recommend you click on the link to check them out. Better yet, come out to the free Veggie Tale movie at First Trinity on Saturday, October 25 from 10 – 11:30. If you’ve never seen them you’re in for a treat. I’m not going to miss it!

We also made leaf crosses, thanking Jesus for the cross. Your welcome to come in the classroom and see them on display on our classroom bulletin board. You will also probably notice that the children’s photos have been moved out into the hallway. I probably need to move them lower so the kids can see them more easily and show you some of their new friends.

Our friend, Jelly (a puppet) visited and reminded us that one way God takes care of us is by giving us our families. All the kids love to give him high fives before he tells his story. We played on riding toys in the gym before finishing our day with a story and songs. We read, A Color of His Own, a story about a chameleon who wished he wouldn’t keep changing colors. But when he befriended another chameleon he didn’t mind changing as long as he shared his colors with his new friend.

We were pretty busy today as we only had one day this week to complete all our blue activities. During free play we made “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.” You are welcome to come in and see these on display on our classroom bulletin board. In art we glued together Madame Blueberry from Veggie Tales. They turned out real cute.

At Bible Story we learned about Jacob, Rachel and Joseph. We were able to put on Joseph’s beautiful coat and were reminded that God always takes care of us. We sang My God is so Big, He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands and Ho, Ho, Ho Hosannah.

It was such a beautiful day we decided to take a walk around the church and collect some colorful, fall leaves and we ended up at the play yard. The kids love playing out there. I wish our weather permitted us to do it more often. Here are some photos from outside. Click on the photo to see the slide show.

Wednesday playground

We came inside and read, God Made all the colors. We ended the day by meeting our Blue Crazy Color Creature, who had the flu and singing “The Color Pokey” with all four colors that we have learned so far this year.

We celebrated “blue” today. During free play the children found a blueberry with their name on it and put it into the attendance basket. They are getting very good at recognizing their own names. Feathers were used to paint bluebirds and finished off by pressing a blue feather right on the wet paint. We will save these for our color books.

At art we painted  paper plates blue to make an ocean and the children pressed on land to make the earth. Next they pressed on the title, “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” and Mrs. Coons stapled on their cut out hands that we traced last Thursday.

In Bible today we learned that Jacob and Rachel took care of their son, Joseph, and gave him a beautiful coat to show their love. Everyone was invited to put on  Joseph’s coat and it helped us remember that God always takes care of us because He loves us. We sang, “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” and “My God is so Big.”

We had a chance to go outside and collect colorful fall leaves. We ended up in the playground and stayed awhile to play on the toys. These photos are from a few weeks ago. They have a ball running around in the fresh air.

Preschool Playground Tuesday/Thursday Class

We ended the day with a story, God Made All the Colors. I passed out red, yellow, green and blue color squares that the children had to fly in the air when we talked about that color in the book. Since we had the colors out we used them to sing The “Color Pokey”. The children put away their colors by sorting them into the corresponding colored bins. They are good sorters because I haven’t tricked anyone into putting them into the wrong bin yet! :-)

We met “Blue” and found out that he got the flu, that Crazy Color Creature!! The children are getting really good at finding things around the room that match our color of the week.

See you Thursday!

Ice Cream Social

Thanks for all who came out to the Ice Cream Social last night. I heard we had about 185 people!! Wow! We even had to set up more tables to accomodate everyone. It was fun to see all the kids and to meet their families. And of course, the ice cream was delicious! My favorite topping was chocolate syrup and whip cream!

Green Week at Preschool

We finished an exciting week of green! Green apple name tags, marble painted frogs, Jr. the Asparagus, paper plate frogs, a green Crazy Color Creature and some green songs, games and books all helped reinforce the color green. And we had a lot of fun doing it too. Some of the church staff even noticed that it must be green week because so many of the children were wearing green. Get ready for blue week!

In Bible story we learned that “God Gives Good Gifts” to us.  God gives us the gift of our family so they will love and take care of us. We also learned that we are a good gift to our parents. We heard about the Bible story of Jacob and Rachel and the gift of Joseph, their son. But God loves us so much that He gave us the best gift ever: Jesus, who came down from heaven, died on the cross and rose again so if we believe in Him we can live with Him forever in heaven.

On Tuesday and Wednesday Sue Steege, Director of Transformation Ministries, led us in chapel. She taught us a neat, laughing song that we will continue to sing in the classroom. The words go like this:

Ho, ho, ho, hosannah, ha, ha halleluia, he, he, he He saved me. I’ve got the joy of the Lord.

She shared with us that God wants to fill our hearts with joy. She even had a big green ball for a prop and talked about God’s good gifts, the two things we have been learning all week. We finished with prayer and gave each child a blessing. We made the sign of the cross on each child’s forehead, looked in their eyes, said their name and said, “Chosen in Christ.”

Have a great weekend.

Mrs. Ferrante

Thoughts on Preschool

Sorry I haven’t written all week. It has bee a little crazy. My husband, Rich, had surgery on his foot on Monday and is now comfortably recuperating at home.  As they were wheeling Rich into surgery I got a phone call from the school nurse telling me my daughter, Anna, had a stomach bug and needed to be picked up. Fortunately my parents were able to drive over and take her home. After two days of resting she is back to health and has returned to school. Mrs. Coons and Mrs. Kluge did a great job taking care of the class in my absence.

If you haven’t seen it on my blog yet, there is a link on the top left column where you can subscribe to my posts and to the comments added. Just click on one or both and type in your email. Every time I update the blog or comments are added it will let you know via email. That way you don’t have to repeatedly check to see if I have added anything.

This is my favorite time in the school year because most of the fears are gone and we have developed pretty good relationships with the kids. Now is when we begin to see their little personalities come out. What a treasure for me to watch shy and quiet kids begin to feel comfortable talking and participating more. Relationships begin to form between the children and sometimes we are surprised to see who connects with who.  But also very normal and common are the children who are comfortable playing by themselves. Our routine becomes smooth and easy because everyone knows what to expect and understands and follows the class rules. For the most part anyway. :-) Those big hugs I get from the kids just fill my heart too.

I’d love to hear any feedback on what the children share at home about what they did or learned in preschool.
