Yellow Week

I’ve been working on taking pictures of all our toys and taping them to our toy shelves. Now the kids can easily put toys back where they belong. All they have to do is match the toy with the picture on the shelf. It’s kind of like a puzzle. They are so good at helping put things away when it is clean up time. I’m very impressed!

We’ve been talking about the color yellow and met and sang about the “Crazy Color Creature, Yellow!” We played The Hokey Pokey with yellow and red rectangles and I Spy Something Yellow, where everyone had a turn and touched one thing they found in the classroom that was yellow. We colored the sun with yellow bingo markers and will save them for a color book we are making. Parents will get to see them in January after they are all put together.

In Bible story we learned that God made families. He gave us families to take care of us because He loves us and all the children enjoyed sharing who is in their family. We learned from Jelly, the puppet, that God loves us even when we do naughty things, though it makes Him sad. He sent us a Savior, Jesus, who died on the cross to take away all the naughty things we do so we can live with Him some day. We learned a poem: “Some families are big, some families are small but God loves families one and all” and we sang a song thanking Jesus for our families: “Thank you, thank you Jesus. Thank you very much. Thank you for my family. I love them a whole bunch. Hey!”

Everyday before snack we thank the child who brought in the snack with a cheer. It goes like this: “Preschool is fun, we learn and play. My friend, (child’s name), brought the snack today. Thank you, (child’s name).” Then we thank God for our food by praying: “Thank you, Lord, for happy hearts, for rain and sunny weather. Thank you, Lord, for this our food and that we’re here together. Amen”

See you soon!

Love, Mrs. Ferrante

Firemen Visit 9 ‘08

This Week at Preschool

We had a great week learning about fire safety. On Monday and Tuesday we practiced some of the things the firemen were going to teach us. When there is smoke we have to “fall and crawl.” Everybody loved crawling through the tunnel where the air was clean. After we crawled out we called 911 on our pretend phone and asked for help. We learned to “stop, drop and roll” to put out our clothes if they start on fire. Our favorite fire song is: Fire, fire, fire, fire, here the whistle blowing. Fire, fire, fire, fire, everybody’s going. Climb the ladder, squirt the hose. With a shh, shh, shh, shh out the fire goes. Ask your child if they can show you the motions that go with it.

On Wednesday and Thursday the firemen came to visit. We watched a video and the firemen showed us the equipment they wear in a fire. One of our classmates got to put on all the fire equipment that was just their size. They told us that even though they look a little scary with their gear on they are our friends and if we see them in a fire they will take us to Mom and Dad so don’t be afraid to go to them. Thursday the firemen got a real call in the middle of our class and two of the brave firemen had to leave quickly with the truck to put out a fire.

This week we painted red fire trucks, marble painted fire helmets and water colored a campfire, gluing on Shredded Wheat for wood and a marshmallow to roast. Next week we should have all our firemen photos hanging on the wall outside the classroom.

Next week is yellow week. I can’t wait to see all the yellow clothes we can find to wear.

Red week is over and we enjoyed making Elmo and  “God Made the Ladybug” headband. The kids did a nice job using a scissors to cut the grass on their hats. The apples we sponge painted are hanging on the big window in the church lobby labeled with your child’s name. Hanging with the apples are our class photos so the whole church can see what wonderful preschool classes we have. I hope you and your child can check it out. I posted those photos below too.

In Bible story today, we learned that God made the animals. Each of us picked out one animal from the mystery bag and was reminded that God made it and said, “This is good” when He saw it. My favorite part though, was at the end of the lesson when I reminded the children that God made each of them too.  Touching each child and saying their name I reminded them, “When God saw you He said, “This is good!!” The looks on their beaming faces were priceless. My prayer for them is that they will know how truly precious they are to God. So precious that He sacrificed His one and only Son, Jesus, so that each of us could live with Him forever.

After snack we went to Celebration (gymnasium) and walked all over the gym imitating different animals that God made. We hopped like a bunny, slithered like a snake, swam like a fish, flew like a bird, ran like a cheetah and walked like a boy and girl. After each animal we said, “God saw it and said…” and the chldren responded, “this is good!!”

We came back to the classroom and read God’s Palette: Red by Charlie Stewart. We sang some of our apple songs and then sang our goodbye song. We had a busy day and we were all a little tired by the end. Have a great weekend and see you next week.

We had fun learning a new song today, called “Way Up High in the Apple Tree.” These are the words: Way up high in the apple tree two red apples smiled down at me. I shook that tree as hard as I could. Down came the apples. Umm, were they good! These photos show the actions the kids did while singing the song;

First Full Day of School

We made it! Everyone did very well on their first full day of school. I didn’t even see any tears although I heard there were a few at home beforehand. We spent the first 45 minutes playing then cleaned up and went to circle. The children were good helpers and did a great job helping with the clean up. They had fun picking out which animal they wanted to stand on at circle. We sang our daily good morning songs and learned about the calendar. I will post the words to these daily songs on a page at the top left hand side of my blog so you can sing them with your kids at home if you would like. We met my friend, Daisy Duck, who taught us the rules of the classroom: 1) Walking feet, 2) inside voices, 3) loving hands, 4) listening ears and 5) good helpers. I sent home a 1/2 sheet with Daisy’s rules. It would be helpful if you went over them with your child.

We broke up into two groups and Mrs. Coons helped the children make their September calendars: coloring their apple and gluing it onto the calendar along with a leaf and worm, while I taught Bible story. In Bible we learned that friends know each others names and I introduced them to two of my friends. FIrst to Aiken Drum, a very silly friend whose hair is made of spaghetti, eyes are made of meatballs, nose is made of Swiss cheese, mouth is made of pizza and and ears are made of corn on the cob. The children had fun singing the silly song describing Aiken Drum. Next I introduced them to my very best friend, Jesus, and they learned that Jesus knows their name because He wants to be their friend too. We learned a short poem that reminds us that “God has many kinds of children, some are tall, some are small and some are just like me.”

We enjoyed our delicious snack thanks to Maddie on Wednesday and Megan on Thursday. We were ready to go back to the circle when we realized our new friend, Daisy Duck, was missing! We heard she had left the room to take a nap so we decided to search the church to find her. This gave us a wonderful opportunity to familiarize ourselves with First Trinity and to meet our church staff. We went to each office and the children asked the staff, “Have you seen Daisy Duck?” With their help we were so excited to finally find Daisy in Celebration (the gym). After playing a game, we returned to the classroom to read, When I Go To Preschool by Jill Harker. In honor of finding Daisy we sang, “Six Little Ducks.” We finished the day with our good bye song and dismissed the children.

See you next week.

Preschool’s First Day!
September 8, 2008, '4:20 pm'

Mrs. Coons and I are so excited. All the children seemed to have a good time and feel pretty comfortable in the classroom. It looks like a wonderful group and we look forward to a great year! Can’t wait to see everyone on Wednesday and Thursday.

If you think your child might get upset when you leave I would like to offer two tips that might help: 1) Don’t let your child see your anxiety about leaving them. If they see you are anxious they might feel that there is a reason to be afraid and 2) The quicker you leave the sooner your child can begin adjusting to the new environment. We promise to take good care of them while you are gone.

Mrs. Coons took some photos that I tried to put up here but couldn’t make it work. As I mentioned at the meeting this blogging thing is all new to me so please be patient as I work out the kinks. I think I will print them out and hang them outside the classroom.

We’ll send home September’s calendar on Wednesday and Thursday so you will know when it’s your turn for snack. Thank you to all who volunteered to help with crafts. I will have some crafts ready to cut out on Wednesday and Thursday.

If you have any questions or concerns please ask.
