Heart Week

We met Hilda Heart this week. “My favorite shape is Hilda Heart. She reminds me Jesus love me with all of His heart.” We sewed two hearts together to make an envelope for the valentines we’ll receive on party day. Our other heart activity is a surprise that you will see next week.

We learned the Bible story where Jesus blessed the children. You can read about it  here. We pretended we were children living when Jesus was here on earth. We walked and walked to see Jesus but when we finally got there Jesus friends said to us, “No, you can’t see Jesus. He is too busy!” We were sad and turned around to leave but then we heard Jesus call out, ” No, let the children come to me. I love them.” So we turned around and ran to him. Since we couldn’t really see Jesus we ran into Mrs. Ferrante’s arms and we all got a great big group hug. We are so thankful that Jesus loves us so much.

We learned a new song this week that we will probably sing often. Here are the words: Skidda ma rinky dinky dink. Skidda ma rinky doo. I love you. 2xs. I love you in the morning and in the afternoon. I love you in the evening and underneath the moon. Oh skidda ma rinky dinky dink. Skidda ma rinky doo. I love you. We end with a silly, “Boop, boop pea doop.”

Mrs. Fesmire, Mrs. Taylor and our sub, Mrs. D’Amico (my sister) did a great job taking care of everyone in the classroom while I met with the parents this week. I wish I could get together with you more often as I enjoyed spending time with you sharing the joy your children are to have in class.

The dental hygienist will be visiting our classroom Monday and Tuesday to teach us about teeth care. Wednesday and Thursday will be our Valentine’s Party. Remember to bring enough valentines for everyone in the class but do not address them. There are still a couple of open spots on the valentine’s sign up sheet. If you haven’t all ready done so please sign up to bring an item for the party. Thanks.

Square Week

We met Samuel Square: “That’s my name. I have four sides that are just the same.” We made a Samuel Square and square mosaic in art. The children enjoyed playing the Hokey Pokey with a square, triangle and circle. “You put your square in. You put your square out. You put your square in and you shake it all about. You do the square pokey and you turn yourself around. That’s what it’s all about. SQUARE”

In Bible we learned that Jesus chose 12 special friends to follow Him. Jesus chooses us to follow Him too. We learned that following a leader means doing what the leader does. We played follow the leader with everyone getting a chance to be the leader. We sang to the tune: Short’nin Bread, “Everybody do this, do this, do this. Everybody do this just like (child’s name). We follow Jesus when we obey our parents, help other people, share our toys and tell other people God loves them so much that He sent Jesus to die on the cross so we could be His children.

Don’t forget to sign up for Valentine’s Party and Parent Teacher Conferences.

Safe Snacks
January 22, 2010, '12:25 pm'

Please remember to check labels carefully on all snacks that you share in school. We cannot serve anything with peanuts or tree nuts. Foods are not allowed to be given out even when the package label says it was made on machines which might have had peanuts or other nuts on them. If you make something from scratch please list the ingredients for us to see. Some brands of  common snacks such as pretzels and animal crackers could contain trace elements of nuts so please check all products carefully.

We do have a child with nut allergies and we want to make sure that everyone stays safe and healthy. Thanks.

Triangle Week Day 2

This is a recap of just Thursday’s class since our Monday/Wednesday class only met once this week.

In art we made ice cream cones with the cone and sprinkles shaped like triangles. We got to see Tilly Triangle and Cynthia Circle once again and sang some more triangle songs.

Today in Bible Story we became the friends in the boat with Jesus when the storm hit. We all sat in chairs lined up like a boat and one person played Jesus, who laid down on the floor behind the chairs to sleep. We slapped our laps to make the sound of the rain and were surprised when we actually began to feel rain as Mrs. Ferrante sprayed water on us! We rocked back and forth as we rubbed our hands together to make the sound of the wind and we clapped our hands to make the sound of thunder. What a storm! We became afraid and yelled out for Jesus. Our friend sleeping in the back of the boat stood up, put his hand up and said “Stop wind!” and the wind stopped. He said, “Stop rain!” and the rain stopped. He said, “Stop Thunder!” and the thunder stopped… and all was quiet.

We learned that we too can call out to Jesus to help us when we are afraid. Jesus promises to always be with us and help us. He is bigger than anything that we are afraid of. We learned the Bible verse, “Grrrrrreat is the Lord!” Ask if your child remembers how to say the words.

Triangle Week

We met Tilly Triangle “who is here to see you. She has three sides and three points too.” Wednesday’s class made ice cream cones (triangles) today and Thursday class will make them tomorrow. Thanks to Mrs. Fesmire who brought a special treat of ice cream for snack to go with our ice cream cones.

Our Bible story this week is Jesus Calms the Storm. You can read the story in Matthew 8:23 – 27. When Jesus was sleeping on a boat with his friends a big storm came up and His friends were very afraid. They called out to Jesus and He stopped the storm. We made a picture of Jesus’ boat (two triangles) on the stormy lake to remind us that Jesus can calm the storms in our lives too if we trust Him.

We learned that when we are afraid we can call out to Jesus and He will help us too. We looked at pictures that showed us some things that we might be afraid of: darkness, going to bed by ourselves, a dog, a doctor giving a shot, getting hurt and a thunder storm. We put them through a slot in a box with Jesus picture on it and when we opened the box none of our fears were in there. Just like that box Jesus can take our fears away and keep us safe. Everyone had a chance to share something they were afraid of and each child prayed that God would help them with their fears. I prayed the words and they repeated them. All their prayers are posted on the prayer wall in the hallway if you would like to read your child’s prayer.

It amazed me how attentive all the children were when we talked about fears and how much they desired to share their own fears with me. What a wonderful opportunity I had to tell them that Jesus is bigger than any of their fears and He is always with them to help them. Some of the children asked about our First Trinity friends who were in the Haiti earthquake. I was able to show them first hand how God answered our prayers to bring them home safely, even Lovelie and Wisken who are Pastor’s adopted Haitian children.

We ask that you would continue to pray for The Children of Israel Orphanage where our team was staying as the U.N. has announced that their compound is unsafe and they are now living in a refuge camp. Please pray for safety and provisions. If you would like continued updates and stories of First Trinity’s mission team’s trip you can click on http://sweetsoup.wordpress.com/

Circle Week
January 18, 2010, '8:39 pm'

We did lots with circles this week! We found our names on circle snowballs, Mrs. Fesmire helped them trace circles in their Itsy Bitsy Circle Books, we made snowmen with large, medium and small white circles and we met Cynthia Circle who is “nice and round, no corners on her are ever found.” Our story, Pa Grapes Shapes by Phil Vischer showed us a special machine that produced wheels for Pa Grape’s car. He couldn’t decide what shape would work best. He tried square wheels, triangle wheels, crescent wheels but finally decided that circles wheels were best. Our second story was Snowmen at Night, a silly story about why snowmen might look different after a night in warmer weather. We thought they started melting but found out that maybe they do some playing with the other snowmen at night.

Our Bible story told us that Jesus went to school to learn about God just like us. He listened to His teachers, prayed, sang praises and read from the Bible just like we do. We walked and walked and walked with Jesus and His family. We loved to sing, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years old, 4 years, 5 years, 6 years old, 7 years, 8 years, 9 years old, 10, 11, 12 years old was Jesus. We began by squatting low like a baby and slowly standing up as we grew just like Jesus.

We sang a song to the tune of I’m a Little Teapot: “I’m a little snowman, short and fat. Here is my broomstick, here is my hat. When the sun comes out I melt away, down, down, down I’m a puddle today.” When we were all melted on theground we learned that snow melts into water but when the sun goes down and it gets cold the water turns to ice. Since we were talking about ice we decided to go ice skating. We enjoyed sliding around the carpet with paper plates under our feet. We put a cup of water outside on the window sill to see what might happen to it. I’m afraid the weather is not cooperating and we probably won’t have ice as hoped.

Triangle Week is coming!

Back from Christmas Vacation
January 8, 2010, '5:52 pm'

I hope that you all had a blessed Christmas. It was wonderful to see all the children again after a couple of weeks away. Everyone adjusted well to the return to school. We hit the road running as we had lots of work to get done. We needed to decorate the outside windows facing the boulevard and our classroom bulletin boards. I hope you enjoy the adorable penguins they made that overlook the street. See if you can find your child’s handiwork. Check out the Eskimos on our classroom bulletin board too. They are dressed nice and warm for this wintry weather we are having.

We learned that many penguins live in the south pole and even though they are birds with wings they don’t fly but use their wings to swim in the cold waters. We found out that blubber under their skin and cuddling with their friends help them stay warm. We looked pretty silly when we tried to waddle like penguins by putting a ball between our legs. It’s not as easy as it looks!

We talked about what we need to wear to stay warm outside in the cold after making our Eskimos. Pretending to dress ourselves we said, “The day is cloudy and the wind is bold. Dress up warmly, you mustn’t get cold! Put on your coat and zip it up tight, put on your left boot, put on your right. Put on your scarf and put on your hat, put on your mittens and clap, clap, clap.

They loved pretending to go sledding by saying, “Here is a hill. (make a hill with your arm) all covered with snow. We’ll get on our sled and ZOOM! down we’ll go. (swoop right hand downward) They yelled, “Again, again!” so we repeated  it over and over again. Finally, I had to say it was time to go in and we pantomimed, “Take off your coat that was zipped up tight, take off your left boot, take off your right. Take off your scarf, take off you hat, take off your mittens and then take a nap.”

We learned that Baby Jesus, born on Christmas day, didn’t stay a baby.  We put candles on his birthday cake and learned that he grew and grew just like us. We learned that even Mrs. Ferrante and Mrs. Fesmire were babies once because we saw their baby pictures.  Jesus soon grew to be a man so that He would die on the cross to save us from our sins.

Next week begins our shapes unit with circles.
